CanScreen

SERVICE UPDATE

Service update: CanScreen is now closed.

CanScreen operated from 2023 to July 2026 as a physician-led, virtual-first service helping British Columbians access cancer screening and follow-up, particularly those without a regular primary care provider.

Created by Dr. Stuart Bax and Dr. Cal Shapiro, CanScreen was a practical response to a gap in preventive healthcare. Over three years, CanScreen helped thousands of British Columbians access cancer screening, identifying numerous cancers and ensuring patients received appropriate follow-up.

The service demonstrated what physician-led innovation could achieve in addressing gaps in healthcare access, while highlighting the challenges of sustaining effective solutions within the healthcare system.

Although the service has closed, its experience offers important lessons about physician-led innovation, equitable access to care and the system-level support needed to make successful services sustainable.

THE VISION

CanScreen was the first clinic dedicated exclusively to cancer screening and cancer care in BC.

CanScreen offered support in accessing publicly funded cancer screening and cancer surveillance to all BC residents, with a special focus on unattached patients. The aim was to increase awareness, access, and participation in cancer screening programs to improve health outcomes for all individuals in BC.
